An evening with John Wesley in Athlone

Celebrated dramatist Mark Topping is back in Ireland and will perform ‘an evening with John Wesley’ in Athlone Methodist Church this evening (Saturday 2 May) at 7.30 pm. Mark spent eight years as curator at Wesley’s New Room and Charles Wesley’s House in Bristol in the course of which he gave hundreds of dramatic presentations to thousands of visitors. His work engages listeners with gripping tales from 50 years of field preaching and challenges them with a message which is as relevant now as it was in Wesley’s day.

Situated in the heart of Athlone, in Northgate Street, Athlone Methodist Church was built in 1865 and Mark’s performance is one of a number of celebratory events to mark the church’s 150th Anniversary. Methodism in Athlone came into being as a result of visits to the town by John Wesley in the middle of the 18th century. In ‘An Evening with John Wesley’, Wesley shares something of his life: his childhood, his search for faith, his field preaching, the mob violence, his horseback adventures and his lifelong, single-minded drive to ‘advance the kingdom of Christ’.
